How to Secure Your Larger Heavier Wall Clocks on the Wall

|

Wall clocks are an amazing and fascinating subject to explore. With the variety of shapes and sizes, you can always expect the unexpected just when you thought you saw it all. Today with all the forms of wall hanging timepieces, one has to be sure when it comes to larger and heaver clocks, that when you hang them on a wall, you are careful enough to hang the clock securely so that your artful display of time will remain safely on the wall.

In order to hang a heavier wall clock on the wall, you must do certain things to make sure your clock will remain in place without doing damage to your wall and possible damage to your clock. If you follow the procedures that I have set forth below, you will have a wall timepiece that will remain in place without any damaging effects whatsoever.

The first thing you have to do is make sure you find a secure section of your wall to fasten your clock. This is done by using a tool that is called a Stud Finder. Behind your plasterboard or drywall walls are support wooden frames called studs. These studs are made from long wood pieces of 2 inch by 4 inch boards. The vertical sections of these frames behind your walls are generally constructed about 18 inches apart along the inner wall.

In order to find exactly where these stud boards are located behind your wall, you will need to use an electronic device called a stud finder. You can find these stud finders at any hardware or home improvement store. With a stud finder you will be able to locate the stud inside your wall near the location you intend to hang your heavy wall clock.

Once you have found the stud behind the wall, make a pencil mark on the wall where you intend to hang your clock. When determining the correct location of inserting a large wood screw into the wall in order to hang your clock, be sure to take into account the position of the hanger located on the back side of the clock.

After you have determined the exact position to insert the screw into the wall, with a hand drill and a tiny drill bit, drill a tiny hole into the wall making sure you drill through the stud. Next, after you drilled your tiny hole into the wall, insert your large wood screw. Make sure you screw the screw in only far enough so the head of the screw sticks out from the wall enough to support the clock. A quarter to a half inch out from the wall should be enough to support the heavy clock. Hang your clock and enjoy.

On the other hand, there are some cases where the stud behind the wall is not located in a position where you intend to hang your timepiece. In this situation the solution to this is using what is called a screw anchor. These screw anchors are available in plastic and metal. There are styles of screw anchors available for a variety of wall hanging projects.

These screw anchors come in different shapes and sizes. Depending on how much weight your wall clock is will determine what style and size screw anchor will be necessary to hang your clock. The employees at your local hardware or home improvement store will have the knowledge to help you determine exactly what type of screw anchor is appropriate for your clock hanging situation. Just tell them exactly what you intend to do.

Once you have determined what type of screw anchor to use, drill an appropriate size hole into the wall. Always make sure you account for the position of the hanger on the back of the clock when positioning your clock hanging screw. After you have inserted the correct screw anchor into the wall, with a screw attached and sticking out from the wall one quarter to one half inch, gently hang your clock. Make sure that your clock is securely in place. Enjoy your clock.

If you are placing a heavy wall clock on a masonry or brick wall the same procedures apply. Determine exactly where on the wall you wish to drill a hole to hang your clock, but with masonry or brick walls use metal screw anchors only.

Hanging a heavy wall clock is not a difficult project when done correctly. There are certain procedures and tools to make the job easy to complete. All you have to know are a few easy steps.

How To Install A Wall Candle Holder Safely

|

The first thing you have to do when safely installing a wall candle holder is to choose a wall sconce that has built in safety features. Always choose a candle holder that has a hurricane glass or some other kind of glass that completely surrounds the candle from top to bottom. This feature will eliminate the possibility of wax getting on your walls, floors or carpet.

The next thing to do is position the wall candle far enough away from flammable objects such as curtains, wall art, coat racks and any other objects that could catch fire if your sconce is positioned too close.
Now you should consider how high on the wall you should place your sconce. To determine how high on the wall your candle holder should be you have to consider your personal circumstances. Take into consideration if you have children or seniors around. Could your pet get too close? Is this sconce to be placed in a high people traffic area?

Once you have considered how high on the wall you need to hang your candle holder, the next thing to do is make sure you attach the sconce to the wall very securely. You have two very safe ways to safely secure your wall candle holder to the wall. You always want to make sure that your sconce will remain on the wall at all times.

The first way to hang your wall sconce is to use a wall anchor. These wall anchors come in a variety of screw sizes. Because of the different anchor sizes, you want to make sure that the anchor you use is the correct size to match the screw you will eventually screw into the anchor. If the anchor is too big for the screw, the wall candle holder will not be secured to the wall properly. As a candle burns there is a weight shift that could cause the candle holder to tip and this could cause candle wax to spill or the candle itself to fall. Be careful to insert the correct wall anchor into the wall so that the wall sconce will be attached properly.

Your other choice for hanging your wall candle is to use mounting brackets that are used for hanging wall planters and other heavy wall hanging objects. These mounting brackets are found at most home improvement and hardware stores. You can also find them online. Do a search and in no time you will find the best wall hanging bracket for your sconce.

Another thing to do is light the candle and drip melted wax on the candle holder base. Immediately place the candle on top of the melted wax so the candle is securely bonded to the candle holder. This way, if the candle holder is tilted, the candle will not fall off of the holder.

So now let’s review this entire wall candle holder installation safety procedure.

1. Make sure your sconce has some sort of glass enclosure so melted wax stays on the holder
2. Make sure the placement of your wall candle is free from fire hazards.
3. Consider how high on the wall you should place the sconce according to your personal circumstances.
4. Securely attach the wall candle holder using the correct wall anchors or mounting brackets.
5. Drip melted wax on the base of the candle holder and place the candle on the melted wax to create a strong bond to the candle holder base.

There you have it. With careful preparation, your wall sconce will flicker with beauty for many years. You can rest assured that you have considered all the possible hazards and removed them from possibly occurring.

Nursery Wall Decor - Lullabies and Stimuli

|

It's the most fantastic, breath taking and scariest day of your life. You are bringing home the most precious possession that you alone are responsible for. Over the last nine months you have devoured every book imaginable on how to take care of your new bundle of joy. You have also spent hours thumbing through numerous catalogs and magazines to decorate the room that your newborn will spend most of its time in. You are aware that this special place can be the key for your child's development. Before this child becomes a reality you just know that everything has to be perfect.

The main theme that has appeared from all that you have read is that you must make this room a place of learning, cozy and comforting. It must have a feeling of love and warmth and the security for the child to be his or herself and grow. Since you will also be spending most of your time there you need to appreciate the room as well. Remember if you are happy and relaxed so will your child.

The first step for the walls is to choose a color schemes. Studies have shown that it is best to choose colors that are light, clear and breezy. Dark shades offer a non stimulating environment and can make the room feel closed in and smaller. Introducing warm colors like rose, peach or primrose helps create a feeling of coziness and adventure. The sooner the baby feels at home in the room the better for everyone involved in its care.

Have fun and be creative and most of all keep safety in mind. Making the perfect space for your little one can be a wonderful experience. You want to make certain whatever wall decor you choose, this will be a place that is comforting and will surround the child with slumber and lullabies and stimuli.

Children grow faster then you expect so try to pick a theme that will grow with your child. You might choose just to do wallpaper borders or stick-ups that can easily be removed when your child has a mind of their own. Another idea is to choose a theme that you can keep adding to as the child develops. Make his or her room one that they will enjoy for years and everyone will win.

Some popular themes are characters from nursery rhymes and fairy tails. When they reach the toddler years these pictures on their walls will be recognized as friends from the stories they have been told over and over again. Animals and flowers are a couple of other soothing themes I might suggest. Whatever you finally decide on, a must for all new parents is to purchase a wall covering that is washable and easy to remove.

In early childhood children have trouble distinguishing what is real from what is imaginary. Whatever characters you decide on, the images should be gentle and definitely not scary.

Consider incorporating shapes, circles, triangles and rectangles also with geometric shapes. It is known that these shapes will allow a child to focus better on objects, which will be a boost to their development. Try to also incorporate colorful patchwork designs and a combination of textures.

The goal to keep in mind when deciding on a theme, color, design and material is that you want wall decor that will attract your babies attention but not overwhelm them so they find it too stimulating to relax.

This is the best time of your life and the excitement that is inside of you is sure to spark your enthusiasm and will automatically generate exciting decor ideas.

Wall Murals - Learn the 2 Basic Mural Types & How to Install Them

|

Have you been thinking about wall murals for one of your rooms? Find out what the two basic types are and the various methods to put either type of mural on your wall. Is it possible to do it yourself or will you need help? See what the answers are to these questions. With either type, you can have a beautiful wall mural of your choice on your wall all in good time.

Murals are basically large images direclty applied or painted on a wall, ceiling or other large surface. We all have seen examples, if not in homes, in schools, museums, restaurants, hospitals, on outside walls and other places. You've got to admit that they are dramatic.

Wall murals perhaps began when prehistoric man or woman wanted to visually express thoughts and decided to do so on cave walls. We all know of the famous locations around the world including France and the American Southwest where we can find such examples. Much more recently in human history we have the fresco murals of Michelangelo on the Sistine Chapel and other Vatican buildings.

There was a teacher's assistant whose mother was an artist. Her mom, the artist, would visit each grandchild's home and paint a wall mural in their room just for them. It would be nice if each of us had such an artist in the family. Think of the memories for these kids! But murals aren't just for kids. Murals can really create an ambiance that no other wall decor can replicate. Imagine your favorite scene on that wall inside your castle, your cave...

Wall murals come in two basic types: those that are applied and others that are painted onto your wall. Applied murals can include:

  • solid vinyl fabric
  • hanging murals
  • window cling murals
  • ceramic tile murals
  • sticker murals

With an applied wall mural, if you're not comfortable doing the "affixing" yourself, there are directories such as the Guild of Professional Paperhangers and National Tile Contractors Association that will help you locate a competent professional.

Painting a mural on a wall can be done by a professionial, a friend, family member...or you. Painting wall murals can be accomplished in a number of ways including:

  • paint by number wall murals
  • wall mural stencils
  • image projection
  • painting wall murals free hand

Most anybody can do a painted mural the first three ways: by number, image projection or stencil. Free hand may require some giftedness. If your gifts reside in other areas of your life - and even here there are work-arounds - and you don't have a friend or family member to do a mural, it is easy enough to find a decorative painter in many areas of the country, especially metropolitan regions. You can consult a resource such as the International Directory of Decorative Painters.

The subject matter of your wall mural is almost limitless. You can grace your wall with various themes including:

  • wildlife
  • flowers
  • nautical
  • beach
  • fantasy
  • citiscapes
  • people
  • nature
  • sports
  • retro
  • tropical
  • vintage posters
  • transportation
  • art masterpieces
  • etc.

If this large variety doesn't do it for you, you can provide your own image. That's right, you can even do custom murals. Create a mural of one of your favorite photos, illustrations or images as long as you have the copyright or permission. In another twist, you order a stock mural but have it personalized for you. For instance, there might be a cat in the mural. You can have your favorite feline inserted in place of the one in the stock image.

You might be lucky enough to find all these mural possibilities in your neck of the woods. It's possible, though not likely. The good thing is you can find great online sources for both applied and painted wall murals including the varied themes. The Internet makes ordering even a custom mural easy. Without doing more than a few mouse click, you could transform a wall. In a matter of days, your blank wall can become a visual story creating a surrounding unlike any other. What do you want on your wall? Imagine!
