Once you know how far apart each holder will be, then using a tape measure, mark the wall with a pencil dot on each place the holder will hang.

If you are placing iron wall candle holders along the sides of wall art or a wall mirror, then what you need to do is measure how far from the left and right side of the artwork you wish to place each holder. With your measuring tape go to the left and right side of the wall art (or wall mirror) and measure from the edge of the art outward on both sides. Make sure your outward measurements on both sides are identical. Repeat this step over again on both sides, only this time go about 8 inches either above or below your first marks on both sides of your wall art (or wall mirror).

Now using the 2 pencil dots you have on both sides of your wall art, line your tape measure from the floor up the wall using the 2 pencil dots as a guide for a straight line and mark a pencil dot on the wall exactly how high you wish to hang your candle holder. Repeat this procedure on the other side of the wall art and you will have identical spacing for your holders on both sides of the wall art (or wall mirror).

Iron wall candle holders are not light in weight. In order to hang these holders securely you must use what is known as a wall anchor. Remember, never try to hang an iron wall candle holder with a screw directly into drywall or plastered walls. It just won't hold the weight.

Wall anchors are small devices that are placed into the wall at the exact same place a screw would go to hold up these types of wall candle. By using a wall anchor you will be able to hold heavy objects such as heavy metal sconces securely to the wall without having to worry about the fixture becoming loose from the wall and eventually falling off the wall.

Retaining walls can be constructed from many different materials using many different techniques. There are several factors that influence which choice will be the best choice for each situation, including cost, height of the wall, soil characteristics, and ground water conditions.

Generally, most municipalities require that any retaining wall over four feet in height be engineered or approved by a licensed engineer. It is important to check local building codes before starting any retaining wall projects, even if it is below four feet tall. After all, retaining walls should be structurally sound before there is any thought of aesthetic appeal. The retaining wall must be able to stand up to the pressure exerted by the backfill, also called lateral earth pressure. This lateral earth pressure is a majority of the force that the retaining wall will need to bear. Lateral earth pressure is determined by studying the weight of the soil unit, slope of the soil, soil type (for plasticity and adhesion purposes with clay soil types), and ground water levels. Engineers do many calculations with these factors to determine what design to implement with the wall. To homeowners and contractors that do not want to go through engineering steps, it is generally a good rule to overdo it. Many structural methods to build retaining walls with withhold earth, at least temporarily, with a height up to four feet, are adequate, which is why most local building codes require engineering if the wall will be over four feet tall.

However, even methods that may seem adequate for retaining earth can fail if they are not built properly. Many times, it is elements below grade that can make (or break) a retaining wall. Problems including bowing, slanting, or cracking are evidence of retaining wall failure because it was not successful in retaining the dirt. Cutting costs with a bad contractor, insufficient materials, or neglecting the below grade elements can turn out to be more expensive over time if replacement or repair is necessary often or if collapse of earth causes damage to nearby structures. For example, erosion can cause foundation issues if dirt erodes from under the foundation. This is just one example how a retaining wall failure can cause expensive problems aside from the cost to repair or replace the retaining wall.

Another aspect that is often neglected or underestimated that can cause failure of a retaining wall is drainage. Inadequate drainage of retaining walls can mean that water is trapped behind the wall, adding to the weight that the wall must hold back. Usually weep holes and/or drainage pipes are used to flush rain water and ground water from behind the wall. It is important that the drainage system, whatever it be, have a filter barrier to keep dirt from clogging the drain or weep hole.

Options for Retaining Wall Materials

· Railroad Crossties - Railroad crossties, also shortened to railroad ties, can be used as a retaining wall material; however, as with most every retaining wall material, it must be installed correctly in order to be a solution. For example, most railroad tie retaining walls will need a substantial footer to tie the crossties to in order to keep the bottom from sliding out. Also, there needs to be perpendicular members placed into the ground behind the wall to keep the wall from overturning. These members, called deadmen, should be at least 1.5 times as long as the wall is high and should be placed at minimum every 6 feet or so. Because railroad ties are wood (even though they are treated most of the time), there is a risk that they may rot over time or be subject to termite infestation, which can lead to a weak wall likely to bulge or break. And, even though there are areas for water to slowly seep though, it is still a good idea to have a filtered drain or weep holes designed into the wall.

With the use of an electronic stud finder, go across the inside area that you have marked until you have an indication of where the wooden studs are located inside the wall. Once you find the studs make a pencil mark indicating where each stud is located.

On the back side of your wall mirror, look for where the mirror hanger attached to the back side of the mirror is located. Measure the distance where the hanger is located from the top of the mirror. Now go to the wall you have just pencil marked. From your top pencil mark, go down the center and mark on the wall, with pencil, exactly where the hanger will be located on the wall when the mirror is hung.

If your mirror has more than one hanger attached to the back side, then measure how far apart each hanger is from the center of the mirror. After you have measured the locations of the hangers, make the pencil markings on the wall where they will be located when the mirror is hung on the wall.

With an electric screwdriver, screw a wall clip on to the wall using a wood screw large enough and long enough to go through the wall and deep into the wooden stud inside the wall. If only one wall clip is necessary, make sure the clip is firmly attached to the wall and hang your mirror.

If your wall mirror requires two wall clips, then with a device called a level, go across the two screw hole markings you have marked on the wall and make any adjustments necessary to make sure your markings are level with each other.

When you are sure that your screw hole markings are level, go ahead and screw on the two wall clips using an electric screwdriver and a wood screw large enough and long enough to go through the wall and deep into the wooden stud inside the wall. Always make sure your wall clips are securely attached to the wall before hanging your decorative wall mirror. Now hang your mirror.

A quarter to a half inch out from the wall should be enough to support the heavy clock. Hang your clock and enjoy.

On the other hand, there are some cases where the stud behind the wall is not located in a position where you intend to hang your timepiece. In this situation the solution to this is using what is called a screw anchor. These screw anchors are available in plastic and metal. There are styles of screw anchors available for a variety of wall hanging projects.

These screw anchors come in different shapes and sizes. Depending on how much weight your wall clock is will determine what style and size screw anchor will be necessary to hang your clock. The employees at your local hardware or home improvement store will have the knowledge to help you determine exactly what type of screw anchor is appropriate for your clock hanging situation. Just tell them exactly what you intend to do.

Once you have determined what type of screw anchor to use, drill an appropriate size hole into the wall. Always make sure you account for the position of the hanger on the back of the clock when positioning your clock hanging screw. After you have inserted the correct screw anchor into the wall, with a screw attached and sticking out from the wall one quarter to one half inch, gently hang your clock. Make sure that your clock is securely in place. Enjoy your clock.

If you are placing a heavy wall clock on a masonry or brick wall the same procedures apply. Determine exactly where on the wall you wish to drill a hole to hang your clock, but with masonry or brick walls use metal screw anchors only.

In order to avoid a wall disaster, you have to plan your wall arrangement in advance in order to determine the best possible configuration. This way you will know, before you apply your art to the wall, that you have considered all possible arrangements. Only then will your end result be a beautiful, artful and eye pleasing display expressing your good taste.

The following steps should be used in order to arrange your wall art in a configuration that sure to please.

The first thing you have to do is decide on which wall you will be hanging these several pieces of art. Once you have decided on the wall, you must measure the area of the wall to get the correct amount of wall space you have to hang your art.

Now, of course, you have to decide on what pieces of art and how many pieces of art you wish to place on this particular wall. Once you have the wall measurements and pieces of art figured out, you are now ready for the next step.

In this next step you will need a large roll of paper or newspaper. What I use for this next step is my unused holiday wrapping paper from the previous holiday season. These are usually long rolls of paper and will work quite well for this next step in this process.

On your floor, arrange newspaper or wrapping paper (back side up) until you have the paper cut or arranged to the exact same size as the wall area you wish to hang your art. Using cellophane tape, tape the pieces of paper sections together. When you are finished, you want to be able to pick up the paper without the separate sections coming apart.

Now for the fun part. What you want to do next is take your framed art and place them on the floor on top of the paper. Arrange the art on top of the paper trying different formations until you have arranged them in a pattern that will ultimately be the way you want the art to hang on the wall.

When you are satisfied with your framed wall art arrangement, this is what you have to do next. Make sure that all the spacing between each art piece is equal. When you are satisfied that all the art is equally spaced, we will move on to the next step.

Now, with all your framed art on the floor, over the paper in the arrangement that you just chose, with a pencil draw an outline of each piece of artwork making sure that your spacing remains equal.

After you have outlined all your artwork on the paper you can move on to the next step.

Now, for each of the outlines you have on the paper, you have to determine where to place the wall hook on the wall to make sure your artwork remains in its original position.

One by one, look at the back of each frame and determine where the picture hangers are located on the back of each individual frame. Measure the distance between the top of each frame and the location of each hanger on the back side of each frame. You could write down the measurements on a piece of paper.

Now go back to the outlines you have drawn on the paper that is still on the floor. Making sure you are using the same arrangement you decided on, mark a dot with a pencil starting from the top side down on the left and right sides of your outline. When you have a pencil dot on each side of all your outlines, draw a straight line across each outline connecting the left and right measurement dot.

After you have all of your measurement dots connected by a straight from left to right, measure the length of each line between the left and right side of each outline and put a dot in the center of each line. This center dot represents the location where the hook or screw should be placed in order to hang the framed wall art on the wall.

Congratulations! You have created a template that will make putting up your multiple framed art as accurate as possible.

The next thing to do is make sure you have removed any objects from your paper template. What you want to do now is carefully (perhaps with the help of a second person) pick up your paper template and with painter's masking tape (because this tape removes from walls without damaging walls), tape your paper template to the wall in the exact position you wish to hang your framed wall art.

With your paper template hanging on the wall in the correct position, put a pencil dot on the wall by pushing the tip of the pencil through the paper template at the exact position you measured where the hook or screw that will hold your art on the wall should be. When you are finished making all the dots on the wall where your hooks or screws should be positioned, then remove the paper template from the wall. Now you have a wall that is marked with dots that represent where to place your hooks or screws.

Depending on how heavy your framed art is, will depend on if you will be using ordinary nail hooks or using drywall anchors inserted into your wall before inserting screws. Just remember, never try hanging framed wall art by inserting a screw directly into a wall that is either made plaster or drywall. Screws just won't hold on these types of walls without inserting some sort of screw anchor first.

Now it is time to insert all your hooks or screws into the wall where you have your pencil dots.

The last thing to do is use your paper template as a map. The template has all the information on it to tell you what wall art goes where. Now hang all your framed wall art in the correct positions and WHALA!! You're finished! A great job well done!

Making an artful statement on a wall is easy to do as long as you use the correct tools. Why make the project difficult when there are ways to make it easy.

In order to compliment the style of your kitchen with a wall clock that will be a charming sensation, all you have to do is know what wall clock will add these attributes to your kitchen's atmosphere.

So okay, let the truth be known that the thought of writing this information on kitchen wall clocks wasn't all my idea. I received an email from the contact page of the website the other day. It was a note from a lady by the name of Catherine.

The family room is a great location for your Wall Mural. The wall you chose is one most easily seen when entering the room. Even better, it doesn’t even have many electrical outlets on it. Having already purchased the Wall Mural, you are now wondering about the cost of professional installation. You want to save money, right? Excellent. Well then, invite a buddy over, roll up your sleeves and set aside a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. You can even keep the game on while you install the Wall Mural yourself! Similar to hanging wallpaper, installing your Wall Mural really is not difficult.

Before you begin your project, be sure to unroll and inspect the Wall Mural panels. Be sure all the pieces are present and in good condition. To achieve the best results, please don’t wing it. Instead, consult the manufacturer's instructions. Keep them at hand and re-consult them as needed.

Prior to hanging, make sure that family room wall is clean and flat. Fix any holes or dents in the wall if there are any. Wash the wall with a mild, soapy water to remove dust and dirt. Then rinse with cool clean water on a sponge or cloth. Allow the wall to air dry completely before you start.

Use gentle, sweeping movements to remove the air pockets without harming the Wall Mural image. Firmly press down on the outer edges to assure adherence of the panel to the wall.

The next panel you choose should be the one that goes directly beneath the first one. You’ll notice there is a small amount of overlap for each panel. This is to help you align the Wall Mural panels together easily yet precisely.

Now simply repeat the above process over again with each adjoining panel of the Wall Mural. Once you have the entire image hung, gently wipe over the entire Wall Mural with a damp cloth or sponge. This helps the wallpaper paste to adhere uniformly. It also helps to remove the excess paste that drips out.

Now you must allow the Wall Mural to air dry completely. Once dried, check all the seams, making sure they are glued down properly. If necessary, use some additional paste to seal any loose edges.

How to Hang Your Wall Tapestry When You Have Choices

One of my favorite ways to decorate a room is to grace one or more walls with a tapestry. These woven beauties are the perfect addition to a room with almost any decorating theme or style. The choices of size and shape and theme are endless. So if a tapestry is something you have been thinking about for one or more rooms of your home or office, it's a good idea to know what your options are in respect to the way you will be hanging this art on your wall.

Depending on how you purchase your tapestry (brick and mortar store or online), there might be some basic preparation involved. Most of the time when you purchase your wall hanging for delivery to your home or office, there will be at least one fold in the tapestry that was necessary for packing your purchase for delivery. When you open your delivered wall hanging there might be a fold line or 2 in your tapestry. Don't fear. Here is a safe way to remove any unwanted fold lines in your tapestry.

To remove any fold lines in your tapestry, use a steam iron and iron the back side of the wall hanging until the fold lines are gone. Otherwise, if you don't have a steam iron, take a regular electric iron and with a damp clean cloth (cloth that the color won't bleed) and place the clean damp cloth over the front of the tapestry where the fold line is and iron at a moderate heat (NOT HOT) until the fold line is gone. These are the safest ways to remove fold lines without damaging your artwork.

All tapestry wall hangings have a basic construction in order to be able to hang them properly on a wall. Just so you understand their construction, they are all lined on the back side and have either a rod pocket or several loops at the top in which you can insert a decorative hanging rod. Some tapestries also have a bottom pocket to insert heavy metal rods in order for the wall hanging to hang straight from top to bottom.

Most tapestries are hung with a decorative rod. These rods, that are usually sold separately, come in a large variety of shapes, styles and colors. Tassels are also available in a large assortment and may be hung from the rod ends along the left and right sides of the wall hanging for a more dramatic effect.

A word of caution if you are buying a tapestry for the first time. You might want to go with a wall tapestry that has a hanging pocket instead of hanging loops. The reason for this is if the construction of the loop hanging tapestry is not done correctly, after time you might see slight curves inward between the loops of your tapestry.

A more economical way to hang your hanging pocket tapestry is to insert a wooden board approximately 1/4 inch thick by 2.5 inches tall. Cut the length of the board so that the ends will not be seen protruding from the hanging pocket at the top of the tapestry. Once you have the length of the board cut to the proper length, drill screw hole evenly along the length of the board. The amount of screw holes will be determined by the size and weight of the tapestry. Larger wall hangings will, of course, will need more support and more screws than smaller wall hangings. Once you have evenly spaced screw hole in the board, take the board, hold it up to the wall at the location the board will be when the tapestry is hung. With a pencil, mark a dot on the wall through each hole to mark where the screws will be driven into the wall to hang the tapestry.

Next, drill a small hole into the wall for each of the pencil dots you have made. It is a good idea to use screw anchors for stronger support, so after you drill the screw holes insert screw anchors into each hole. Once you have all your holes drilled and all your anchors inserted into the holes, insert the board into the hanging pocket of your tapestry and hold the tapestry up to the wall and with the proper size screw for your anchors insert each screw. This method of hanging a tapestry will mount your wall hanging flush to the wall.

If your situation calls for mounting your tapestry on a curved wall then use Velcro®. You can find Velcro tape. This form of Velcro has an adhesive backing and can be applied directly to the back side of your tapestry. You can apply Velcro tape directly on your wall, but to avoid the tearing of your wall, should you want to remove the Velcro on a future date, screw a few thin strips of wood on your wall to form a frame. Then Velcro the wooden strips instead of the wall. If the time comes to remove the tapestry, all you have are a few screw holes to patch up.

You now have several ways in which to mount your tapestry to the wall. All you have to do now is find a tapestry to match the theme of the room you wish to hang it in. Whether you choose one large wall tapestry or a series of several small tapestries with a similar theme, hung together, you will have a most enjoyable eye-pleasing atmosphere for many years to come.

The great wall at Badaling became a strategic point of the wall since the Warring states period when it was built. Being the very first section of the wall to be opened to tourists, it has recorded a statistics of about 140 million visitors who have climbed successively. This section was built with huge bar stones which weighed hundreds of kilograms with watch towers at every distance. These watch towers were used as the deployment points for the military during the olden days. This section of the wall is very crowded being that it is the most visited section.

The Simatai Great Wall is located in the northeast of Beijing. Its construction started in the Ming dynasty and measures around 5.4 kilometers with 35 watch towers. Unlike the other sections, Simatai section of the great wall is very quiet and remote and this has challenged many hikers to climb this section in quest of adventure.

The Mutianyu section of the great wall is the most preserved section of the great wall which is very important in Chinese military history. This section has cable cars installed allowing tourists to move from end to the other. It is slightly rugged and full of green plans making it the greenest part of the wall. The Mutianyu section is noted as the essence of the great wall because of the distinct style and construction of this part. Shixiaguan Great Wall is the most part of the great wall to be opened to visitors and still shows the ruins of some of the old construction from the ancient times.

Wall Lighting - Inside and Outside

It was a Tuesday morning in upper Midwest. I was just rising from a good night’s sleep. I happen to be an early morning riser and it’s 4:30AM. I’m down in my kitchen having my first cup of coffee and preparing for the day ahead.

I turn on my TV to get a glimpse of the morning news and weather report. After about 15 minutes, I turn off the TV and head upstairs to take a shower.

Now I’m ready to attack the day. The first thing I do is go to my office and turn on my computer. After my computer has booted up, I go to my email to sort through my messages.

What a pleasant surprise. I got a message from one of my recent subscribers to my e-letter. Her name is Ann. She is from New England and she is asking me for help in finding her some inside and outside wall lighting for her home.

Anyway, Ann is from Connecticut and owns a Contemporary Colonial Home built in 1984. She has recently taken inventory on her home and has done some remodeling in her kitchen and 3 bathrooms. She said as she was doing an inspection of her home to see what could be replaced. She noticed that there were several wall lighting fixtures both inside and outside her home that should be replaced with new more appealing fixtures.

The first of these wall lighting fixtures that needed replacement were in her formal dining room. She went on to say that the dining room walls are light yellow wallpaper with a small flower print placed close together dotting the entire surface of the wallpaper. In the middle of one wall is a rust and dark brown brick fireplace with tan mortar in between the brick, running half way up the wall. The width of the brick fireplace was about 7 feet.

She also said that there is a formal dining room table made of solid oak, with oak chairs that are cushioned with padded brown leather covers both on the seats and back rests. There is a candelabra chandelier in polished brass above the dining room table.

On the innermost wall of the dining room was a custom made buffet cabinet. This buffet cabinet was 15 feet long. Above the buffet cabinet are 5 wall lighting fixtures equally separated on the wall. Each one of these wall lighting fixtures was a 2 candle electric wall sconce.

Ann goes on to say that she would like to change out these electric candle wall sconces to something more contemporary and artful.

Right away I’m thinking let’s go with something in a contemporary brass. After searching around, I found a wall lighting fixture that will create a vibrant ambiance in her formal dining room. So I considered many combinations and came up with what I thought would be the perfect compliment. The other two lights on her dining room wall would be the two light Tiffany wall sconces in Valiant Bronze. This stained glass lighting fixture incorporates the use of warm earth tones and geometric shapes to create a fixture that is both comforting yet inventive.

Next, Ann wanted to change her outside wall lighting around her house. She had a three car attached garage, There was one double overhead door and one single overhead door.

There are three wall lighting fixtures on this wall. She had mentioned that she was looking for large outdoor lighting fixtures in a silver metal finish.

My suggestion to Ann was a clean new look. I chose the 27th Street outdoor wall fixture in satin etched nickel. I also suggested that she use this same wall lighting fixture for the wall light by her front door and on the back wall of her home where she has a deck.
